Safety is not just compliance—it’s productivity. Well-trained operators protect both people and assets, reducing incidents and improving fuel economy.

1) Pre-Start Culture

Adopt a 5-minute ritual before ignition:

  • Fluids, leaks, belts, hoses
  • Tires & wheel nuts
  • Lights, mirrors, wipers, horn
  • Brakes, retarder, and warning lights
Standardize via a simple checklist card in every cab.

2) Loading Discipline

  • Keep center of gravity low and even; avoid heaping that blocks rear visibility.
  • Use spotters in congested zones; no people in the danger arc.
  • Align body spec and liner to the transported material to prevent hang-ups.

3) Speed, Spacing & Grades

  • Respect posted site limits and weather adjustments.
  • Maintain safe stopping distance on loose surfaces.
  • Use engine braking/retarders on descents; avoid prolonged service-brake riding.

4) Visibility & Communication

  • Clean mirrors and cameras at start of shift.
  • Standardize hand signals and radio callouts at intersections, dumps, and workshops.
  • Mark blind corners and install convex mirrors where needed.

5) Fatigue & Shift Design

  • Enforce break rotations; hydrate often.
  • Watch for signs of fatigue (lane wandering, late braking).
  • Use buddy checks: operators look out for one another.

Toolbox for Supervisors

  • Daily toolbox talk template (hazards, weather, route changes)
  • Weekly near-miss review (no blame)
  • Monthly skills refreshers (loads, grades, emergency drills)
